So I have a 1940 nickel, and in my eyes it's in vf condition. The only thing that I see wrong with the coin is maybe the smallest scratch you could see on such an old coin, and a small yellow spot at the top. I can very clearly see every steps on Monticello's staircase. Has a nice shine to it. Can't get a picture just yet but I will tonight. I was wondering if this coin would be worth much if it's in vf condition. Heard something about the steps being visible is a plus.
While price guides shouldn't be taken as law, they can often give you a very general idea of value. In this case you'd see that the coin in your estimated range is one not worth the time or effort to bother with, unfortunately.
