hello, I just found this 1940 with steps and lite were on the coin what do you all think it would grade at? and yes I know it's not full steps but it has most of them for its age
Obverse is nicer even with the Frankenstein gashes on his head. Serious gouges on the reverse. 2 under the 1st U in Pluribus, 3 or 4 on the home Monticello. There are steps but they are interrupted at several points. I am sure it looks different in hand (luster-wise).
The coin appears to have friction in the fields which would make it AU, but I don't see any loss of detail and based on the photos, there seems to be plenty of luster left. I'm at AU58 on this coin. As for the steps, it is counterintuitive, but the earlier Jefferson have much better step detail than the later dates. The full step availability for 1940 is 20% which is pretty high for the series and your coin doesn't really come close. Jeffersons are usually only worth a few bucks in the lower MS grades; you really need the coins to be gem or better to have any real value.
