Chemical rinse. Could have also been caused from improper storage over a prolonged period of time. Won't command a premium, IMO. -Brian

I don't believe an improper alloy mixture would cause that color......... Would it? :scratch: I truly do not believe it to be a "woody". Anyone else feel like giving their opinion on the coin? -Brian
Yes, a woody. I think the different alloys toned differently on the obverse, thats why the strange toning pattern.
Although Doug will disagree, from what I have been able to make out, it is not that the alloy CAUSES the color change. It is merely that the alloy reacts differently with its surroundings. So if the atmosphere is right for a coin to turn blue, the alloy may turn darker or may not turn at all. Either way, the alloy becomes pronounced.
