Hey guys I know I posted this ealier in the week without a pic, so i got a good pic and i hope it will help. Sorry about the repost but I wanted to start a new thread. Can anyone help me out with this? Is this a mint mark or not?
I don't know what it is but it is not a mintmark. The only mintmarks used in 1940 were D and S and that does not look like either. AND mintmarks on nickels were placed on the reverse die at that time. There is no way a mintmark would appear on the obverse die.
Yes I know the mint mark is on the reverse, but the location of this mark is in the same location where the mint mark would be on the reverse. Thanks for you two cents but it was more like a penny, cuz I stated in the tilte of original post mint mark on obverse. Could this be a 5 and not a S or a D?
The location of the of the mintmark in relation to the obverse would be more around the Y in LIBERTY. That apears to be some type of die damage.
I thought that too when I first saw it, but the scrape goes through the coin so the metal would be on eather side of the date (start or endpoint) where it ended. Yes/No? I think the little nub sticking out of the 4 near the scrape is metal. Leading me to think the scrape ran from bottom of the date (the 0) up to the to (the 1).
