Hey there fellow numismatists. I bought this collection of Nickels from a fellow who is 83 years old that has been building sets since he was 10 years old. He figured it was time to let it go so he can use the cash to go towards buying a violin. Well this 1940 D was part of the collection and it a beautiful coin But if you look at it closely there is small black dots on the obverse.I soaked it in acetone and it did nothing! Is there another trick to remove theses spots?
An acid such as white vinegar might lighten them some but will smooth out the coin. I never tried white vinegar on something like this, I'm just guessing at it. It makes a lot of sense to me acetone wouldn't work. Those are distracting, though. I'm just looking at them and my eyes are bouncing around from one to the next one. Technically it's at a nice Uncirculated grade, but the market grade I'd imagine is going to suffer for the erratic eye movement, a tough break.
very very nice set from back in time and original! thanks for sharing. he's not getting a Stratovarius but hopefully he'll be happy. love the angle on the D too!
Looks like they are there to say as it looks like the coin was sneezed on from a short distance away. Over time a sneezed on coin will take on this appearance.
