1940 & 1940D Jefferson Nickel. MS65 or MS66

    I am still grading and sorting my coin collection. I need some help grading these two items. I believe both are MS65 but I do see some positives for a MS66 grade. I know that the 1940D may be FS. Do you agree. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

    It's really hard to give a grade with the pics provided, but I would say no on the FS . The ding in the center of the bottom 2 steps would make it very unlikely.

    I agree, I can't determine a grade for those coins with those photos. Having said that, the surfaces of both coins certainly look to be gem+ quality.

    pcgs 66
    ngc 66

    coin2:
    pcgs 65
    ngc 66

    can't tell fs from pics -- looks like it has a chance. hit will hurt.

    I think they would both have a good shot at 66. Not so sure about the FS.

    Both are very nice, I don't see FS though. MS-66 for the pair.

    Full step designation is very tough.
    I don't see it on those.
    When they say 'full step', they mean it in a big way.
    Here is the back of one of Lehigh's FS nickels to show how obvious full steps must be:
