1939 quarter 9/8 9 over 8 ?

Do I see a 9 over an 8 on the date ?

okay. I don't really collect quarters but that stuck out so I'd thought I'd ask.
I couldn't find anything doing a general internet search …

 

is it a common "visual" thing ?
and why is it like that ?

 

If you look closely at circulated coins (try a roll of circulated State quarters) you'll see every number and every letter of the alphabet eventually. There is a name for it (I forgot it ) either beginning with an "S," "T," or "P." Someone here will tell us.

 

I believe that would be … "P" for visual insanity.

I do see the "8", but it is not shaped like the 8 font that was used on the Washington quarters so it CAN'T be a 9/8.
