1939 quarter 9/8 9 over 8 ?

    okay. I don't really collect quarters but that stuck out so I'd thought I'd ask.
    I couldn't find anything doing a general internet search …

    is it a common "visual" thing ?

    If you look closely at circulated coins (try a roll of circulated State quarters) you'll see every number and every letter of the alphabet eventually. There is a name for it (I :bucktooth: forgot it :facepalm:) either beginning with an "S," "T," or "P." Someone here will tell us.

    I don't see anything going on with the date, but it's a pretty coin. Quite nice.

    I do see the "8", but it is not shaped like the 8 font that was used on the Washington quarters so it CAN'T be a 9/8.
