I can't tell you how happy I was today to get home from a "Monday " work day and find this waiting for me. I had one once before and sold it ,as a nickel variety collector this was the last hole in my major Jefferson nickel varieties collection . This was purchased from a member here at CT. So here she is the last variety void in the Paddy Jefferson Variety hoard. GTG ?
It looks uncirculated, but based on the weak strike, staining, and lack of luster, I'm gonna say MS63. But any Doubled Monticello is very cool regardless of grade.
Thanks one day I will start a thread on the major Jefferson variety nickels. The Five Cent coin has been a favorite of mine for many years. And love the phrase ''still only a nickel"
Was GONNA go 58 but since the almighty Lehigh said Unc.... ms63 Now, is this the one they call doubled monticello ? I would go look it up but ive had 3 shots of cuervo and 4 coronas ( they dont serve miller high life )
I think you should go with your gut. We are grading off photos. This coin could very easily be AU and the photo could be tricking me into believing it is MS.
Youre right Lehigh, you SHOULD always go w 1st answer. So....... I change mine back to AU58, I mean this IS Rev of 40 right? So steps shouldnt look like that unless circumvented?
I'm thinking NGC called it MS-64. It looks like some good flashy luster there. But I think weaker strike and lack of eye appeal brought it down a bit.
This specimen from Benjamin images I could tell that it was well worth the money. It may be Au. But if all Au 55 coins looked like this one I wouldn't need any MS coins. I can't nail it on the head but for some reason the 39 doubled Monticello coins do lack luster.....what's funny is that this specimen shows more luster than the one I sold years ago. I will have to look in the next few days when I can access my photo files if I still have a copy of the last 39 FS-801. Yes this has a weak strike a slight reverse rotation 2-4 degrees .
I was at 62 but it is hard to grade nickels. What are the markers that it is a 1940 reverse? Thank you.
Hmmm.... time to pull out my Jefferson album my father gave to my son. Let's see what I can find. Darn you variety people!
