One of my latest discoveries from circulation is this 1939 nickel. I am looking for confirmation of its grading and what is the doubled MONTICELLO suppose to look like. I tried to take some pics but the sunlight was non existant for the past 2 weeks. I can definately see a doubling of some kind on the tops (north) of the letters with my magnifying glass but no luck with the pics. Here it is anyway for now. does anyone have a picture of one? I am hoping that mine turns out to be the real thing and not some sort of Poormans Double. All opinions are welcome. Thanks Digger
Can't tell if it's the DDR variety, but I do believe it is an XF coin. Didn't have much luck finding pictures, but if you click here you will see one. If you place your cursor over the picture of the reverse, and click it, you will see a larger picture. Good luck!
Thanks Jody526! I am surprised at the grade of xf. I expected less as I am new at this hobby. I reviewed the pics at heritage and concluded that mine may yet still be geniune. The first pic was shadowed to the north of monticello and the second was slightly out of focus. I am satisfied at this point that a geniune double is not obvious like the 55 lincoln penny.I am starting to enjoy this hobby more and more each day.I can't believe that I actually found this coin in circulation. My coin prices guide lists it at $140 in XF condition, what do you think?
If you are interested I can verify the attribution for you free of charge. You can check out that info here. As far as price goes I recently sold an XF example for $50. IMO the coin is usually well over valued in circulated grades because it isn't all that rare as such.
Thanks for the offer JT, I think I will put that offer on the back burner for now.The last time I sent something insured it was stolen. I am certain it was stolen by that smart *** clerk that insisted on verifying the contents. anyway I lost money on that deal and since then I believe things are better off being sent without knowledge of what is inside the package. If this were a more valuable coin I would concider sending it to you but for now I will keep hunting for a photo and will also try to enlarge the area in question under better lighting and submit a new image. BTW what does IMO stand for ? I am still learning the lingo. I still have a lot of newbie left in me. Digger
digger, That sure was a generous offer Jason put forth. I think I would have taken him up on it. Having trouble with your local Post Office? Try another one. There should be no reason for them to ask about the contents of a bubble mailer, sent First Class, but if they ever do, just tell them it's hobby supplies. Never tell anyone there are coins in your envelope. BTW, IMO = in my opinion. Later, ~Jody~
