This is a PCGS MS66FS coin. Just didn't look at the MM closely before. Have had it for a couple years. Couldn't find anything in the RPM book or on the nickel sites. Does anyone have any ideas about the mint mark. I included different rotation pics, as the lighting is fixed? Bob
I don't think so. Since it appears on both sides of the mint mark I think it is due to die deterioration.
i'm not sure how much this pic helps, but the die appears to be EDS. I don't even see any obvious die polishing. Bob
I understand your point, but do you understand mine ? The outline of the underlying mint mark appears on all sides - top, sides and bottom. And it appears to be perfectly equal on all sides. Now the only way that could happen, if it were an RPM, would be for a slightly smaller mm punch to be used the second time, and that the second punch was placed precisely on top of and perfectly centered over the larger first mint mark. And since the mint marks were punched in by hand - I find that just a tad hard to believe. Now it's certainly possible I am wrong. And since neither the Cherrypicker's Guide nor CONECA have any listing for a '38-S RPM - you would have a new variety discovery. So maybe it would be worthwhile to send the coin to CONECA for confirmation.
