I found a few odd looking nickles in a recently aquired collection. I believe they came from a retailer, Littleton. These are titled "USA Proof Cameo," and have a side view of Jefferson that I have never seen. Are these phony? I understand these retailers pump up the prices, but I wouldn't think they would misrepresent an official mintage. I am new to this hobby, although recall most of the basics from the old days.
    Thanks

You would need to show us a picture to better understand what you are talking about. Sounds like you are talking about one of the 2006-8 series nickels. Older than that the face hasn't changed since the beginning (1938).

Here is a web site that is a good reference: http://varietynickels.com/pages/jefferson-nickel/date-guide.php

What you have is probably the original proprosed design by felix schlag. He originally wanted the Monticello to take on a 3 dimemensional view. These are fairly collectible. Hope this helps. Tom
