Nice Coin!!! If the double scratch on the neck and the three nicks under "E Pluribus Unum" are on the coin, I'd give it a solid MS 63 or 64. If they are on the plastic and not the coin, easily an MS 64 OR 65. Great Merc.

would you say it was worth the $4.50?

Yes, great deal. Here's the Numismedia price guide. Look on the bottom row at the values of this coin at grades 62-64. Of course, these values are for graded coins and this dime is really a more common date. But overall, nice coin. Was it ebay?

You paid 4.50 for it? wow well if it is graded at a 64 or 65 there are 2 different S dimes for that year. one is the regular s the other is an FB (not sure).

according to PCGS the dealer price for that dime as a regular MS64s is about 30 dollars.

if it is the FB then it is about 70.

at an MS 65 the regular s is 37
    the FB is 120.

(i am still new to this and just going by the pcgs price guide). a correction would be good here if it is needed.

The spots on the obverse would hurt the grade. The reverse die looks new and the obverse die looks later die state. But it happens.

That's a very nice looking dime. IMO it's a FBL coin. As to getting it graded, that's a whole other thread.
