I have a 1937 penny that was made in the philippines but has united states of america on the front and one centavo fulipinas on the back. I did some research on the internet and found out that it is a penny. But i don't think it is worth much other than my enjoyment of looking it up and finding out the history behind it. Just for curiousity sake does any one know excatly how little it is worth? I imagine it is somewhere around fifty cents or less but i really have know idea. I love to hear any comments!
It is a centavo, not a "penny", minted at Manilla while the Commonwealth of the Phillipines was a US possesion in a status very similar to the present-day status of Puerto Rico. One of 15,790,000 minted in bronze, it's value according to the latest edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins is less than 25¢-$25.00, depending entirely on its condition. The scratches and spots you mention in another thread indicate a damaged condition, which means the coin would probably not be purchased by a dealer unless it came as part of a larger lot; and if it did, it would go in his bowl of two-for-a-quarter, or such. I don't believe I've done it previously, so here's a big to CoinTalk.
Thank You. I am very thankful for the information. I never realized I'd enjoy putting time and effort into looking up something that wasn't worth too much other than information. I have really enjoyed myself with the two coins I have, looking up information on them and finding out bits of history I wouldn't have know otherwise. This started out as just my curiousity and I now think this will become a hobby I will enjoy for years to come. So thanks for the info and the welcome.
