I recently purchased this one because I like the way she looks I finally had a chance to look it over today and noticed that it does not have the same texture as other coins I have from the same era I was wondering if anyone knew why. Maybe it is just something with the 37's just not sure. Thanks Stew
My first impression would be to tell you that it is a fake coin. The legends are somewhat mushy, there is a blundered R on the obv, and all the little raised bumps and pits - all of these are indicators of a fake coin. One other possibility though, the coin was struck with very worn and rusty dies. That would cause most of the same diagnostics. GO to Heritage and check other '37s, if they have the same blundered R on the obv, then I would go with the latter possibility.
Thank you for your reply, This is a bit of a tough one to figure. If you are talking about the right leg of the "R" in Liberty that is a hit at the bottom of the right leg. I think you may be right about the rusty die. I will check the Heritage auctions when I get back from taking the son to the dentist Thank You Stewart
Looks like a 1937-P Lincoln to me, Looks like a 1937-P Lincoln to me, the 30's decade Lincoln's often come with nice strikes - this one looks okay a common coin though - you were not thinking it was a proof were you???
no not a proof I was thinking maybe rusted dies or some kind of die treatment to give it that mottled look, Mint worker with a few too many beers for lunch maybe, I dont know just struck me as different
No, I am talking about the R in TRUST. The entire letter is misshaped and the right leg is missing. Now that may be due to a hit or slight damage, but it doesn't really look like in the pics you have. Try a closeup pic of that R that is in focus.
Sorry about the typo I meant TRUST. No caffeine in me yet when I wrote that:goof: Here are some close-ups of the "R" in Trust. Seeing all the Beautiful Lincolns on here has me really noticing them in the local coin shops lately. I'm am not sure I am going to build a set yet,But I like getting individual specimens. The same way I collect my Ike's
Much better, I would agree it's a hit that has squished the R. A rusty, worn out die would be my best guess then.
GDJMSP, Thank you for your input I know it is not a real expensive or rare coin at all, It is just a real nice specimen that caught my attention and I thought was really cool looking. I am not really into the whole "get a value on it soon as you can thing" although a lot of my coins are a tad on the expensive side. I will leave the valuation up to my son or grand kids to deal with. For me I am just having a blast having a chance to go through my second childhood with such a great hobby that moves much differently than when I was a kid in the late 60's and 70's ( computers,Digital cameras, Internet) Again Thank You Stewart
