This is the best defintion I can give you....I think it is when dirt or something got traped under the metal and then the metal loosened and opened like that you have there..
Look at my avatar for an example of a die crack. Because metal moves into the crack in the die, a raised line appears on the coin.
Roy... I'm always curious when I see your posts... what coin is your avatar of? May I see the whole deal?
A lamination is caused when a planchet is improperly prepared, sometimes because it contains impurities, sometimes when it's allowed to develop internal air bubbles, sometimes when it's not well annealed.
It's a lamination crack. The metal is cracking and peeling due to impurities in the alloy. This is extremely common.
I have just ran across about 50 of them. They are pretty common but, Interesting nonetheless. Laminations.. Great conversation starters at coin club meetings.
To be honest I have no idea what I'm looking at in your avatar. Which is the crack and what coin is it?
