1936 Mercury Dime - Die Crack?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by dave new to coins, Apr 30, 2015.

  1. I know, pictures terrible. Under my 40x in daylight the line running from bottom of head through date does not look like damage, it looks like a defect. Does anyone agree? If it were, would it add any significant value? Any help appreciated.

Hi Dave. Welcome to CoinTalk. A Die Crack would be raised not incused as your Scratch. I posted this on a similar thread for the same question earlier today..
Here is a simple definition and picture - Die cracks on coins are caused by a shallow crack in the die. The crack actually creates a thin recess in the dies surface and during the strike the planchet metal fills in the recess. Die cracks are common on all U.S. Coin series IMG_4124.JPG
