I was going thru my GFatha's collection last night and found one of these. It's not a MS62 like this one.. but it's pretty close maybe a MS60.. what would it be worth? I'll upload some real photos of my actual coin tonight.
Nice find! These coins can be found for under $100 in UNC condition. I bought one earlier this year that was probably MS63-64 raw for $85 at an auction. Graded examples may go for a little more.
Awesome! If it looks like MS60+ then I'm probably going to get it slabbed.. It'll be my first.. most of the rest of my coinage is not worth enough to warrant a slab. Any thoughts on this?
Post some pics... lets take a look. I couldn't tell you either way whether or not to slab it. You can look at my album here on CT and see all the early comms that I have and only 3 or 4 are slabbed. The rest are in my albums. Would I like to have them slabbed...... sure, if nothing else, for preservation purposes, but the cost at this time is prohibitive. Plus, none of mine are super high grade with the exception of one or two that would go maybe 65. There are those members on here that would say do not waste the time and money to slab them and then there are others that would say if the coin is that nice then get it slabbed. Some may even say that unless you are planning on selling it, don't waste your money getting it slabbed. Either way, you have to be comforable with whatever you do. Many grading services only offer the cheaper prices when you have 5 or more coins graded, so having one coin graded that may go between a 60-62 may not be worth it. If you want it slabbed there are do it yourself slabs that would be much more economical. What ever you do we want to see pics.....!!!!
don't slab, unless you are planning on a set of 'low grades'. and this one isn't low enough to qualify.
Sorry man, those guys are right. Does not look to be circulated. It means a lot since it was your grandfathers so I wouldn't get rid of it either. I will show you one of my first coins that my dad gave me. It is not worth much, but sentimentally it is priceless. Also attached is my unc Long Island to compare yours to.
The coin is definitely circulated. I would grade this VF 30. I don't know if it would go much higher, but then again.. I am no expert. Maybe some more experienced members will share their thoughts.
So I'm kind of confused.. is unc a bad thing? I figured that it'd be good considering the age of the coin. When I pulled up a MS60 price in Coin Manage it says roughly about $85.00 I just found this e-bay auction for an AU of the same coin and it sold for $81.00 .. is that low for this coin? You said it's not worth much.. so I'm a little confused.
Just so I can brush up on my skillz.. what should I look at on this coin that would let me know it's circulated? Maybe I should take it out of the holder and take a bit better scan of it. Thanks for everyone's help btw.
I'd put it in a Intersept Shield 2X2 they are good looking offer the best protection and a lot cheaper than slabbing . JMO rzage
Whoops, sorry... I see what you are pointing out. What I meant to say was, "it looks to be circulated". Keep in mind, back in those days in what we call the "early commemorative" days, coin collecting wasn't as prevelant as it is now. Of course you had your collectors, but many of these comms found their way into circulation and were used as legal tender. Like the 1893 Columbian Comm that was my dad's... he actually pulled this out of circulation when he was a kid. As far as value goes, I think $81 is high for a true AU coin, but the coin in that auction would probably count as a slider. They are calling it an AU, but even the seller said that it was AU+ so I am not surpised that it went for that high. It looked like a nice example. The grey sheet guide that I have only goes down to XF prices which were $65-70. I feel that your coin is not even XF, but rather VF and I would guess that those prices would be $55-60 or somewhere around there. I am not saying the coin is worthless, because there is a value to the coin, but rather that the coin would not go for UNC or AU prices. If a graded/slabbed example is what you are looking for then go here. This company has some really nice examples of both raw and slabbed coins for decent prices too. I would keep the coin as a reminder of your granddad and don't worry about its value. If you need help finding a nice example of one, just drop me a pm and I will be more than happy to help you find one.
NGC MS64 $125 Reverse PCGS MS63 $120 Reverse ANACS MS63 $120 Reverse Here are some sample pics for you to compare yours too and some prices as well. See if you could see the difference. Look at the color. Look at the lettering and hair. Look at the ship on the reverse.
Joe , they all look like the same coin , not bad at all price and coins . BTW I got a new computer and lost all my old Favorites , do you have the adress to that commemerative site with the good prices . rzage:hail::whistle:
Thank you for going into so much detail. It as helped me a lot. I suppose that maybe I'm kind of a noob at this, so I have a hard time seeing the differences between the coins you put up and the one I have other than color. Is there maybe something that I should notice on my coin like a worn out place or nick/scratch of some kind? Again, thank you everyone for your help.
