Hi i was searching through some old penny's i got from a relative and found this 1936D penny it appears to be made of zinc and weighs 2.4 grams. Any idea if this is just meant to be a counterfeit or if it was a promotional piece like found in a cereal box or what?
It is a 1986 D penny not a 1936, if it was 1936 it would have a wheat reverse. Probaly some dipped in some acid that took away the copper layer. No worth much more than a penny
i agree with mcblzr i found about 15-20 of these last year. its a college science project where they electroplate the copper onto something else
lol thanks guys, i feel dumb not only do i need glasses i also need to remember the difference between wheat and memorial backs lol can't believe i didn't catch that
That's a 1986 D; take a look at the date more carefully, and also note that the memorial reverse did not come out until 1959. NO way can it be a 1936.
Just finished posting this in another related type of thread and still had it on the clipboard. It also shows the "silver" zinc ones also. http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/gold-pennies
