I am new to paper money, but was at an auction yesterday and 12 - $1 1935 certs went for $40. Is that a good deal (did not know to look for color of stamp). I looked 1935 certs on eBay and prices seemed to be all over the place. What are the good ones and what are they worth.

It all has to do with condition, serial number, condition, centering, condition, eye appeal, and did I mention condition.
1935 $1 SC's should have blue seals. The majority of 1935A $1 SC's also have blue seals, but some emergency notes (Hawaii & N.Africa) have brown or yellow seals.

It's hard to argue against $2 over face for any note really, except for say 1990 and later issue.
