I am not familiar with Buffalo nickles so not sure if this is something common or not. Possibly a chipped die?

What are you seeing? The only thing I'm seeing on the closeup of the reverse is late stage die wear and the remains of an old die clash through E Pluribus Unum that is being erased by the die wear.

Yes, sorry. I should have been clearer.
I didn't consider clash as I couldn't find anything on the front. Just figured it was a die chip or something and wanted to get conformation.

    Agree with @Conder101

I love that simple beautiful AMERICAN coin!

Great pictures! Do you think the coin was cleaned?

    Thanks!
I am going through lots of old coins that were in a tobacco tin can for at least 30 years so if it was cleaned before that I can't say. There are what looks to be like rust streaks across the coin, but it's hard to see it in the pics. The coins weren't protected at all and were just loose in the can.

After I get through the American coins, I have a bunch or worldwide coins to try and look through and identify. That should be a challenge as most of them look very old as well and I know nothing of foreign currency.

That was the second comment on my pictures. I am actually trying to do better as I'm only using my cell phone and using my 10x loupe for the close ups. I'm trying to figure out the lighting, but I'm glad that people are able to see what I am talking about.

    Cheers

No, you're doing a good job! The light and focus thing just takes time.

I would say, if that coin has been in that can for 30+ years, it's in original/circulated condition. That toning or rust looks great, don't touch it!

Not that yours is, but I have similar streaks on a few buffalo nickels from scotch tape. When I was a kid (many years ago), I scotch taped coins into the albums. Not good! :yuck: The tape was on the coins and in the albums so long, it eventually dried up and fell off. Which of course left a nice residue glue mark/streak on the coins. I hate when that happens!

That's die fatigue. They get wrinkled like that.
