If you look above and around the last 3 in the date, there is extra metal. There is also traces of extra metal on the other numerals as well. I had a rough time looking for info/images of any overdates online. What do I have here? Overdate? Re-cut date? Doubled die? Is there any premium over melt for this coin?? Help!! Here is a link to a Stacks/Bowers auction for the 1933/2 overdate, which doesn't really look like your coin (most of the "action" on theirs takes place under the top bar of the 3, yours looks like it's on top.) I'm wondering if it's a different overdate, or if it might be a die clash?

I'd buy it for a premium over melt, but that's just me.

I specialize in overdates, and I do see something around the last 3, perhaps even the digit before? I don't own this particular overdate, so to see where a 3/2 might show on the coin, I did the overlay below using a 1933 and 1932 peso:

I think if a 2 projected above the 3, one should see a raised, curved mark. The other places that markers are commonly seen on 3/2 are: the diagonal of the 2 between the lower part of the 3, and the horizontal stroke crossing the lower loop of the 3.

On your coin, since the mark is straight, I suspect we're looking at a 3/3, with the prior digit at an angle. This is a common reason for repunching--the first digit was crooked, so they fixed it and only partially polished away the prior digit.

Back to markers for the 1933/2--there is one attributed on Heritage, pictured below, where the 3/2 is on the second to last digit. I think it's reasonable to suspect that could be the horizontal stroke of the 2 remaining. And it's common to have the overdate visible on the second digit when a die is reused from a prior decade--and mints do save dies this long.

As for the coin slabbed by PCGS as a 1933/2, let's just say I'm a little dubious of possible markers presented in that photo. While I think something could be there, I usually expect to see some part of the underlying digit with some relief, ie reflecting light/casting a shadow like the main digit. It's all too easy to cross my eyes and imagine something is there--which is never the best way to attribute overdates. ;)

    Thanks for the input fellas....
Kurt I think you had a good explanation for this anomaly, at 1st I thought a 5 - 6 or 7 could of been the underlying date digits. But it does resemble a crooked 3 now that you mention it.... I wonder if the mint worker had too much tequila the night b4 and was a still a little tipsy.... I purchased the coin for $10 to make a buck off it but I wanted to make sure I wasn't letting one slip by me hence the thread. Does $15-$20 sound about right for a price tag then??It's an AU coin at best with nice luster and peripheral toning both sidez

I think your photos clearly show repunching, even some on the other 3. That might be worth extra to a variety collector, but it's hard for me to judge by how much. Only some US varieties have very definite premiums on repunching. I think any silver coin in a better grade is worth more than bullion value, and if it shows a variety, that makes it even more interesting.

Thanks Kurt, it's nice to communicate and share with guys like you.... Hopefully the next time we chat , it will be about a real overdate, and valuable too!:greedy:
