Does anyone have a nice example of either a 1932-D or a 1932-S Washington quarter? These coins are rarer that the 1909-S VDB as far as mintage numbers go but don't command the same prices in the lower grades. I am looking for something in the VG-8 to XF-40 range to finish off my last two sets but everything I see on ebay is lucky to becalled a quarter still. Are there just not many good examples left of these coins?

    Moen,
Problem free examples are scarce. Most examples out there have been scrubbed it seems.

I found one that looks pretty nice but I'm guesing it is going for about 600-900 dollars eventually. They all look pretty bad compared to mine and I thought mine weren't all that nice. Maybe the auction in Chicago will have some nice pieces.

In the VG grade range the coins should be under $200 each....
I bought a 1932-S in NGC AU53 not long ago for right over $200 and at the time overpaid. As Zane said...most have been cleaned at somepoint in time as mine has...but you can still find a nice one!

Look at Heritage. They have 12 certified for sale right now. Most are MSXX ($$$$$$) or cleaned, but they are there. They have sold many just this year that meet you requirements.

I have the 32-D in VF and the 32-S in EF. It took a while, I turned down several problem coins in each, and in the end the 32-D was a bit more pricy than I originally wanted to go. But I wanted them in that grade range so they would fit with the rest of my set.

Unfortunately even the examples I have a f-12 and f-15 (d,s respectively) have been cleaned.

I think I have an "S" taken from circulation, but other than that I've never been willing to pay the asking prices for coins that are of no interest to me other than being from my birth year (for which a full type set of circulating coins would only have a 77¢ face value (2 cents, 3 quarters) instead of the usual $5.73 from those days (3 each of cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves and dollars.) ;)

    Hello, my friend.
    I have one of each.
The '32-D is an original, that I would grade G/AG.
The '32-S is a cleaned, but solid, G. (It came in an ANACS slab labled "VG-10", with no mention of the cleaning.)
Some might not call them "nice", but I am proud to own them.

I believe they are fairly common, just overpriced during the current market swing.

Amen to that Jody! Some of the prices are ridiculous. The only thing they have going for them is their scarce numbers. They are, IMO, some of the ugliest examples of the series of any coin I collect. It's almost like they came out pre-worn from the mint. I have a 32-D and a 32-S that I'd give a grade of F-12 to each. I may invest in some high quality examples if they are available. I just want some nice keys for each set.

    I can certainly understand that.

I have been working on a complete date/mintmark collection, of circulated silver Washington Quarters, for several years.
I have it complete through 1944.
The coins are pretty evenly matched at Good through Very Good.
I'll get around to completing the album one of these days. LOL

I have three times the problem. I have four sets of 1932 through 1964. Only one has both the 32-D and the 32-S. I need to get two more of each to complete the other two sets and I'm going to get rid of the forth set that is missing about seven dates including both the 32's.

I have two more complete sets from 1960-1980. I need one more set but they are fairly cheap dates. The 1981 through 1998 are easy also. I think I will complete all 3 sets by mid summer at this rate if I can find some good 32's.

Then the tough ones, all the silvers from 1992-2007.

What do you include in your sets? Proofs, silvers, varieties?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

My Washington Quarter collection consists of a well circulated, incomplete (complete through 1944) PDS set, that's in an old Whitman Deluxe album (1932-1964).

I also have a Littleton folder that has an example of each different reverse type (Eagle, Drummer Boy and each State). Those are uncirculated.

Not a real serious collector of Washington Quarters.

Good luck with your search for the coins needed to complete your sets.
    They're out there.
I'm sure you know how it is. Patience and dillegence usually pay off.

My recommendation would be to check with as many Coin Dealers in your area as possible! Normally, I would not advise going to a Coin Dealer for a specific coin as far too many of them want top dollar prices for most that they have while at the same time, they give very little for what you are selling. However, in the case of 1932-D and 1932-S Quarters, I would say that you might find one cheaper from a (non-Ebaying) Coin Dealer than you ever will on eBay or other Coin Auction sites. A (non-eBaying) Coin Dealer might have several of these and if he/she has been unable to sell them for awhile, then he/she might work you a great deal for both or more. Besides, there are just too many other Coin Collectors or Coin Owner Wannabees in competition with each other on eBay and the other Coin Auction sites to really get a good or realistic price deal, as they all are trying to complete sets! All too often, these Coin Collectors or Coin Owner Wannabees get caught up in the bidding freenzy and will bid way too high for the coins, just so they will not be outbid and so that they can get the coin. The real downfall to this freenzied bidding, is that eventually these higher bid prices effect the values of many coins that you see in publications such as Coin Values, Coin Prices, the RedBook and even the Grey Sheets. These over-inflated prices are not even remotely realistic in the real World of the true Coin Market and all too often cause Collectors and even Coin Dealers to suffer losses when they purchase these coins at the higher prices then try to resell them later down the road once the realism of the over-inflated values has set in!

    Good luck...Frank

That is a nice one in the range I'm looking for. It'll go much higher I'll bet. Thanks for posting it. :)

With four days left, I would bet on it as well. I just looked and it was at $147, my guess it will finish $300+.

I have both the 1932-d and 1932-s in F12 that I got from a seller on Ebay. I believe I paid around $135-140 dollars for each of them.
