    Hello Everyone,

I am very new at this but have been researching a bit since I took out my mothers small coin collection she left me. I have just had it stored in a safe and decided to look at. she had this one coin wrapped up in plastic with a piece of masking tape on that said "1932 D Quarter, almost uncirculated. after researching on the web and in a coin book I bought I have come to the understanding that this is a pretty rare quarter. We had on of those shows in town last week that will buy coins and watches from people. I took it down there because they said they were certified nemustics or coing graders. He looked at it and said it was pretty ugly but would give me $50 for it. I said no thanks. I would like to get some of you experts to give me your opinion on what grade you think it might be. It kind of looks dirty, but read on here to not to try to clean it. Anyway I am attaching to scanned pics and two pics I took with my 6 megapixels Nikon SLR (a little better detail can be seen, but light made it look kind of goldish) Any thoughts would surely be welcome. thanks in advance.

thanks much SPOCK1K, it was late last night when I finally got pics ready to download.. I have no idea why I said franklin instead of Washington. Is there any way to revise a title of a Post?

Thanks for the information on the quarter also. I thought it had to be worth a little more then the $50 he said he would give me.

Personally were I you, I would go back and verbally abuse the dealer that offered $50 for it, it was quite unfair of them to do so.

Your quarter is not only a very desirable date and mintmark, but the key to the entire Washington Quarter series. Not only that, but in my opinion, your mother was conservative in her grading and this coin might even be considered Mint State, but that determination should be made by an expert that you can trust. (The coin show dealer is NOT someone you can trust.)

In Mint State and About Uncirculated condition, this coin sells in the $300 - $500 range. You can search completed auctions on eBay for more accurate prices.

Thanks Mike for the information. I should have known as I watched all the people go in to the room and come out with what they took in. Didnt see anybody going out with any cash. They advertise that they pay the highest for coins and watches. Yeah....

yeah avoid those places. Mike means well but dont go about abusing anyone thats not the way you want to handle yourself. Let us know the zip code ( dont flash your address) city state and someone here will be able to direct you to a honest dealer if you are actually going to sell it. alternatively you can post on the open forum to for a decent offer :)

    You got that right!
If you had cleaned it you would have lowered the value by at least $100.

Nice, and Mom was right, an AU.

Thanks for the information Treashunt, my mother passed away 8 years ago and probably didnt collect any coins for 20 years before that. So this little gem has been sitting in the safe for 30 years. What's cute is on that piece of tape she had on it... she said could be worth up to $2.

Mr. Spock1, Wichita Kansas 67207. How much does it usually cost to get a coin graded? thanks Road

its usually about $20 plus cost of shipping both ways

    go to www.ngc.com
    or www.pcgs.com

and see if they have any registered dealers in your area who will take submissions it will be cheaper and they can screen the coin for you ( should be able to get it done for $20) alternatively you can call them to get the same info

    Help again please - Cleaned????

    Team,

I sold this coin on e-bay for $381. The person who bought is said that after closer inspection that it has been cleaned sometime in the past and he doesnt want it now, and wants a refund. How can a person tell if a coin has ever been cleaned in the last 56 years at some time? I dont want this to happen again. Like I said, that coin hasnt even seen the light of day for the last 30 years. Thanks.

That can happen. If a cleaning was done anytime in the past before it was stored, the signs of it don't disappear through time. They may get covered by toning. But if the coin wasn't worn since the cleaning, a person could see it if the cleaning was enough to disturb the luster flow lines. That said, perhaps that person is wrong also and it wasn't cleaned. I am not sure of your return policy, but you would have to stay within that.

This is one of the main reasons for getting a key expensive coin slabbed before selling it. Usually you recover the cost in the auction, and there should be little argument about cleaning and grade.

Usually Ebay allows you to recover fees and relist if it is a mutual agreement of return. I would feel I would accept the return and refund. If you don't get a free relist, I would have it slabbed by one of the 4 ebay accepts before relisting.

It's possible that it has been cleaned in the past. There are many indicators to tell if a coin has, in fact, been cleaned. Look for tiny "hairline" type markings on the coin; that's usually an indication that a coin has been cleaned.

Please keep in mind that this is still a very valuable coin whether or not it's been cleaned. Like another poster stated, this is one of the "keys" to the entire Washington Quarter series. Your mom was very smart to save this coin.

From your pics, I can't really say whether or not it's been cleaned. Really, someone needs to look at the coin in hand. Are there any reputable coin dealers in you area? If so, please take it to them for an opinion. If they recommend that you should submit it to one of the third-party-graders like PCGS or NGC, you might be wise to consider doing so. If the coin has been cleaned, they will send it back to you telling you that it's been cleaned and they won't place it in one of their holders.

Another option you may think about is have it conserved by NCS. NCS will "slab" your coin in a holder merely as a conservation measure whether it's been cleaned or not.

Now, as far as the buyer on eBay is concerned, I would return his money. If he's not happy with the coin, I feel that it's fair that you respect his wishes. HOWEVER, make sure that you receive the coin back from him before you refund his money and make absolutely certain that it's the same coin that you sent to him!

Regardless of all this, you still have a very valuable, very desirable coin. Since it was your mother's, if I were you I would keep it. Trust me, years from now you'll be glad you did. Let us know how everything goes...

Oh, and as far as the coin show dealer goes, the next time you see him please tell him that there's a bridge in Brooklyn you would like to sell him. I can just picture him when he was looking at your coin. He was probably salivating like a rabid dog thinking that he was going to make a killing off of you. Dealers like that make me sick!

I would have been ecstatic to have bought that for $381. Cleaned or not. My personal opinion is that if it were cleaned it was done lightly. The stunning detail in the breast feathers makes me think this is at least a MS 60 coin possibly as high as 63.

And if I were to make a guess at it (without having the coin in hand) I'd say that it hasn't been cleaned...

Regardless I'd send this one in to ANACS. (or PCGS or NGC... but I like ANACS better for coins which might have been cleaned)

Whatever happened with the seller that you sold the quarter to? Be careful to look over the coin when/if you get it back. There are many devious inviduals out there that would very easily swap your coin for a lesser quality coin and accuse you of sending them a bad coin, and because it is "raw", it could be hard for you to dispute them. Basically, it is your word against theirs. Fortunately, you have before pics as record so if you do get your coin back make sure you compare it to the pics to make sure you got your original coin back.

I totally agree. Especially since you can't do jack about it, since sellers can't leave negative feedback any more. The feedback system WAS abused by some sellers no doubt, but the way to curb that was to target bad mass-scammers, not screw everyone over. Heard of the switch happening with others, except with a fake, and with a $1000+ coin.

Good point and the same that I was going to make! Refund the money when the coin is returned but before you do, make sure that it is the coin you posted here and sent to the Buyer. If not, then take the appropriate actions through eBay and PayPal (if the payment was sent to you through them) to get your' coin back before refunding the Buyer's money. This make take some phone calls to PayPal for information on the steps you need to take to resolve this matter and to make them fully aware of the situation. Keep copies of everything, including emails, pictures and any other correspondence between you and the Buyer. If the Buyer does pull a switch-a-roo on you, you may end up having to go through the Legal System (i.e. Law Enforcement, the U.S. Postal Service, Lawyers and the Court System). The threat of arrest and incarceration has a re-deeming effect on a lot of folks!

If and when you get the coin back, you can either have it Certified and Graded before trying to sell it again or you could re-list it on eBay with the disclaimers "I am a novice and not an expert on coins", "It is possible that the coin was cleaned at some time in the past" and "Please review the pictures of the coin and determine the grade and condition yourself before bidding".

    Good Luck!
