Just got this off of ebay. I know this is a common coin to alter.

    Is it real? What grade?

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

Raw, key date coin that is commonly faked? I would pass.

That being said, the coin looks like the real thing, but the dirt around the mintmark has me extremely suspicious.

    I hope you got a return privilege...Mike

Looks real to me. According to ANA Grading Standards Guide pg 209, "The mintmark on earlier issues tends to be filled." I'd go VF. But of course I'm no expert. Good luck!! Still $50-75 coin (BB)

I read that there is almost an endent around the D and S mintmarks for the 1932 Quarters and so dirt sometimes will go there.....I bought some raw but sold them back to the guy I got them from later on.....I don't know if any of them were fake---I sent a 1932-S that I got raw off to NGC and it came back F15 but out of about 5 I only sent off that one.
I will say that almost all of the coins had alittle dirt around the mintmark.

In the Blue Book, which is prices DEALERS are likely to pay....its $75-150 VF20 to EF40...Sorry for the mistake. CoinWorld trends 200-300 in same grades.

The blue book is like the Red Book---outdated in most cases and the prices should be taken with a grain of salt.

Well thats true, but its funny dealers are willing to pay about half of the trends. Which the blue blook reflects. (Maybe I need to find another dealer) Had a 1878 7TF rev 79 MS65 trended at 3200. He said he'd give me 100 for it. I think it was overgraded anyhow, maybe MS63 which brought trend to 200. But still. If I'm gonna sell a coin or even buy one I DO al least tke a look at it.

What I said about the Red and Blue book goes for CW Trends too....many times CW overprices their trends....as do MOST price guides---the ONLY price guides I would go by is Gray Sheet and ended online auctions such as Heritage.

The last two 1878 7TF rev 79 MS65 Morgan dollars that sold on ebay went like this.
    $306.00
    $249.00
    $116.00

So your dealers offer of $100 was about right---maybe alittle low.

It's too bad that it isn't MS. Then you could see if there was a lot of die polish on the reverse or not.

Bought mine for 205....Sold for 283....So I'm cool with that....just wish it wouldn't have been overgraded. End the end all is well!
