Here is a new one for me! I've heard alot about these little coins here on CT because alot of ya'll think that they are under valued and a lower mintage--- I've been working on my Mercury Dime set alot lately hoping to complete it here before long---earlier this year I got a heck of a deal on the 16D so the only key date left is the 21D. I had always had a few Mercury dimes around but I've looked around and looked in the dealers box of silver dimes and got the set down to 25 holes left---on Mon. I only got to go through about 1/10 of the dealers dime box so maybe next week I can compelte it even more!...I'm just doing them in circulated grades.... So what do you grade this little dime???....Joe G. on WINS and myself agree on the VG grade--it has nice full rims but the detail isn't enough to get it F IMHO.... Speedy
Speedster, I've give it a solid F-12... It's better than VG, but not XF... so FINE it is! Count me as one of those who likes the 31-D MERC. It's a Depression-era coin and it makes you think what was going on during the time this coin was circulating. "Brother, can you spare a dime"?
Why not? The 42/1 is an error. Regardless, if I'm not mistaken I think Speedy told us some while back that he'd obtained a 42/1. Am I correct, Speedy? Or did I just dream it? :goofer:
Speedy, That's a nice pick-up.Did you get that one out of the dealer's box too? It made me curious to see what the one in my album looked like so I took it out and snapped a couple of shots. I think it would probably get a Fine even thought it is not the most beautiful thing.I love mercs!when I was a kid,I used to find the occasional one in change and I'd shine it up like new..LOL..I wonder how many I ruined.
If you have your Mercury dime collection in the library of Coins album, there is a space for the 42/1.
Well there's no space for it in the Dansco #7123 thank goodness.Otherwise I'd have TWO permanent holes instead of one.
BIG mistake by dansco..They also left out a space for the 55DD in the Lincoln set BIG mistake. If I didn't have the 42/1 and the 55DD I would not be satified. So why does dansco have a spot for the 22 plain cent? That an error.
Well its more of a variety so I don't count it in my set---but yes I do have one---I have the P and might try to find a D to go along with it. I got it at a good price so I couldn't pass it up. Nope---I got this one from a WINS member---I think I paid $8 for it---the ones from my dealers box were all right around melt value--$1 each...I think melt was around $.90 that day--yours is really nice!!!.... For this set, since it is circulated grades I'm just using a Whitman Folder--for my more $$ collections I use either Dansco or get them slabbed. Such coins as the 55DD and the 22 Plain and the 42/1....I don't count in sets---they are nice to have but I don't think by any means makes them the ONLY way to have a complete set---I guess if you really wanted a complete set you would need all of the RPM's OMM's Die Cracks and cud's etc.... Speedy
Just to put everyones mind at rest---most of the coins I pulled out of the dealers box were ones I needed to complete my set in the 40's....but I also pulled some from the 20's out of the box at the same time---I can't wait to go back on Mon. because I think I'll be able to find the rest I need. Speedy
Speedy: Good luck, it is always fun to find some pieces that you need, and the fun of putting that last piece in the album it great! Ed: He is referring to a dealer's junk box. Just a box of miscellaneous coins, susually. Apparently, here, the dealer has his Mercs dumped into a large box so that buyers can scan them for 'treasures'.
Wow! I didn't realize you were alive in the '40s. You've aged well. I have a complete set of circulation issue Mercs (most in WELL circulated condition). I have several of the "small S" 1945's, but none of the other varieties. Someday, I'd like to get the 42/1 varieties and the proofs, but my wife has this odd attraction to paying the light bill.
