Can anyone else see what i'm seeing with this date? It's actually a coin I was talking about a long time ago.... the 1930? that looked like it was once a 1931 .... Hopefully you can see it in the pic I have provided.... comments please.
Well.... I told my dealer about it, and if in fact it is a die chip, then it's worth quite a bit of money, or so it shows in the breens encyclopedia....... I actually haven't shown him the coin yet though.
Hope it turns out to be a valuable coin. I'm not familiar with any of "Breen's" publications, but I wish you all the best.
If this is really an overdate, it would have to have been made with a die struck first with a 1930 master die, then restruck with a 1931 master die. Probability of that is about .001%, I'd think. Your best bet would be to let the folks at ANACS look at it for an opinion. If it is an overdate, it would be quite valuable, if not, then you spent a few bucks to know for sure. There have been a few supposed overdates that were later confirmed to be simply interesting die chips, which have little value. It looks really neat!
Breen does describe a 1930D cent with a completely filled 0 in the date, caused by chipping of the working die, and he lists it as scarce. I don't think this describes your piece.
No, I took it to my local dealer and he said that he believes that it is simply damage caused at the mint when it was ejected...... ohhhhhhhhh well, I wasn't too excited about this one, i'm waitin to find out what's goin on with my other mystery coin come next year when he heads out to one of the big shows.
