Picked this up for $15... didn't realize it was a rare date. What is this worth? Should I take it out of this holder?
Condition wise the coin is not a bad find for $15. At that price I would be happy to get it. The Peace Dollar is definitely worth more then $15. Unfortunately the 1928p is the key date of the series along with the 1921, 1934s, and as The Pawn Stars said the 1922 ultra high relief. If your Peace Dollar was minted in Philadelphia it would be worth in the $300-500 dollar range. Even though your Peace Dollar is not a key date it is still a nice find.
If you want taking your Peace Dollar out of it's holder won't do any harm but I would recommend keeping it in a holder but it doesn't have to be the one it is currently in.
Thanks everyone. I try to get coins when I get the chance but don't see many of these peace dollars. Neither her or I knew it's value (obviously). I figured $15 was a safe # and the seller was just wanting to get rid of it for extra $.
Nice find!! IMHO, you can never go wrong with a Peace Dollar. Especially for $15. Although your coin is not graded, here's a link to the PCGS Price Guide for Peace Dollars. This will give you an idea about the how the value of a 28S compares to a 28P. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/priceguidedetail.aspx?ms=4&pr=1&sp=1&c=26&title=peace dollar And a link to the PCGS Population Report (this shows the number of coins graded by PCGS in each grade). . . http://www.pcgs.com/pop/detail.aspx?c=26&p=MS&t=5 Part of my Peace Collection:
