I found a 1928 Peace dollar in a coin collection I have inherited. I was wondering if it is real and what is the value of this coin, I have listed two pictures below. Thank you everyone!!
I don't see anything right off to make me think it isn't genuine. It does look to have been harshly cleaned at some point in the past.
Looks right as rain to me. Would grade out in the XF area, but it does looked to have had a slight cleaning.
I also have another one in a case here is a picture of the front and back, What would the coins be worth in the case and the one that is not in the case?
The Peace dollar in the holder is not the same as the other. Both coins in the holder are worth roughly melt value. The first coin you showed, if genuine, is worth maybe $175-$200.
The 1928 looks XF to me and I see no signs of heavy cleaning. Regardless, that date bids $340 in VG (though not much more, even in AU) and should easily be worth $300.
Perhaps/probably. They could also be the result of circulation and/or mishandling. Either way, it does not look harshly cleaned to me.
Looks to me like hairlines on the obverse from harsh cleaning. But I rarely disagree with Mark so maybe it's just me. Lance.
The coin looks legit to me. The first pics posted I would have called it cleaned but the second set makes me think that maybe I was wrong. The hairlines could mean many different things. I'd want to see the coin in hand. If you sell it don't sell it for spot price its worth a few hundred dollars at least.
Here are better pictures, I have no clue what that substance is on the case. I just inherited this coin collection from my mother who got it from her dad.
