Will China make a 100th anniversary edition of the 1928 auto dollar and will it have a new 2028 buick on it or the original 1928 buick or both?
If they do I hope I'm still around to buy it. (The coin) Hope it's a 2028 Regal Tour X and I can afford to buy the real one. (The auto).
Why should they? Its opening a can of worms if you look into the history of this coin. Struck to commemorate the opening of highway in Kweichow province, this was actually struck under the order of a tyrant warlord that featured his car. On top of this, Kweichow is one of the poorer provinces compared to the rest of the country. Having a highway that led to nowhere? The tyrant's leadership went nowhere too. There is a reason why the survival rate of this coin is really low.
Coinweek has an interesting article surrounding the sordid history of this coin and the Warlord Zhou Xicheng. The Auto Dollar is also a major rarity with specimens grading in the VG to VF range worth between $500 to $2500 according to NGC and Krause. However, with any rarity and particular those of Chinese origin counterfeits and crude copies abound in the marketplace thus, warranting caution for any numismatist wishing to acquire one. https://coinweek.com/world-coins/the-fitzcarraldo-of-kweichow-and-the-1928-chinese-auto-dollar/ https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...dollar-y-428-171928-cuid-1045602-duid-1289044
I think you would be lucky to get a damaged example even at $500. I've never seen one for sale under $1000. I've tried to hunt for one a while back before Chinese coin prices went out of control and it proved to be unaffordable.
