Anyone here know a fair price to pay for a CGA Gem 65 w/o OPQ designation? I looked at Heritage archives but they don't list CGA that I've seen. Would I just average out the PCGS/PMG examples in 64? Thanks.
Alf: Logical reasoning would make one think why does Heritage not list CGA? I would simply do a web search on CGA and read the history and then decide for yourself on what would be best to do or not do. That is and will be a personal decision. Good luck with it. Regards, RickieB
Rickie I've heard all the horror stories about CGA and their history before their re-inventing of the company. I know that any note graded by them will command a substantial discount in prices realized. But just for kicks and giggles I was hoping to get a feel on what to pay for a gem note. If and when I get it in hand then I can decide to send it in to one of the top two services. But in all reality I find it hard to believe that everything they graded was skewed. Certainly there are some fairly closely graded notes out there that can be compared to the other two. Like I said in my original post, I think you can downgrade it at least one point due to them being compared to say like Anacs is in the coin world.
I agree with your comments on CGA and about perhaps not all were "skewed" as you put it kindly. If I am not mistaken this occured on many Large Size notes and notes of substantial rarity. However, the result of this has been the downgrade of reputation before it changed hands. From what I understand, the new owner is playing it with sincere honesty and places a "Star" symbol on the notes now graded by this company are better aligned with the other top 2. Gold Certs are a specialty on their own, I once owned 3 and gradng these were quite difficult to the untrained lay person like myself. My CHCU mark turned out to be high grade AU so me like others who collected these really relied on the top 2 TPGs to grade. (Large Size Notes) For Small size I would consult with Don C. Kelly, Scott Lindquist and Perhaps Lynn Knight. Another person would be Tim K or Alex Perakis. Most $10s that I have seen in CHCU or above start around $1100 and up from there. Regards, RickieB
What I'm thinking is if I win one of the 4 consec. notes that are up for sale on ebay I might at a later date cut them out of the CGA holder and submit them raw. That way PMG or PCGS aren't influenced by the CGA stigma.
Well some food for thought onthat would be....Serial Numbers are recorded and can be cross referenced. PCGS and PMG would be neglegent in their efforts if they did not attempt to do this as a reference of what has been recorded in the past. Note histories are quite common place even amongst collectors who have their own tracking methods. I was shocked by this when posting a $10 Legal Tender note and had Martin Gengerke follow up with a PM on who the note's previous owners were and when it was sold and cross graded. Turns out it was a fellow who once collected with Amon Carter in Dallas Tex, my home state.
Wow I never even thought of that. I guess it's true that you learn something new every day. And even old dogs like me can learn a new trick every now and then.
That is whats cool about this forum. There are many here that know a tremendous amount about banknotes....there is so much info and so many specialties it is or would be great difficulty in trying to master it all. I think that if you meet some of the other guys here you will see the diversification in different areas of knowledge. It's a cool forum and am sure they all will welcome you.
