Hello all. I have never had a reason to contemplate sending a coin in for slabbing until now. I figure instead of listening to a bunch of other detecting nuts I'd ask a bunch of coin nuts their opinion on this coin and 1. Is it a good idea to have it graded 2. Value as-is and would it be worth more graded 3. How do I submit it for grading The only local coin shop just told me I can do it on-line but I go on-line and they all say I have to go through a dealer. I guess I'll go to intro section now and post there so as not to appear too rude. Thanks all
I'm not an expert on SLQs but judging by the pictures, it seems like there are quite a few hairlines all going in the same direction. Did you say your a metal detectorist? I'm guessing you gave this coin a rub after you dug it? Unfortunately it won't come back with a numeric grade, but will be put into a details label holder. At least the details holder guarantees the coin is genuine but I don't know if it would significantly effect the value. Generally you do need to go through a dealer unless you purchase a membership to either NGC or PCGS. The membership includes direct submission as well as usually a few "free" gradings. If all your looking to do is grade one coin, it's probably best to just find a dealer who will send it for you. When you factor in shipping and insurance it will be at least $50 to grade it, plus anything the dealer charges for consignment.
These are very rough numbers, just for the sake of discussion. Currently, "extremely fine" is worth nearly 4 times "very fine" and "almost uncirculated" is worth well over double "extremely fine". This is not to imply your coin fits precisely into any of these grades. But with such large multiples, it is surely worth letting PCGS or NGC grade the coin. The rarest Barber Quarter, 1901-S, for instance, has multiples that are MUCH less than your coin, at least through Uncirculated MS-60. So my vote would be fairly strong in favor of grading.
I'd say it'd probably grade xf details cleaning if you were in it for the right money it'd be well worth slabbing even if details sometimes you can get a ct member to let you piggyback their submission too saves a couple bucks
Nooo, I found it in my dad's basement...honest. You don't know how gut-wrenching it was to swipe away at least $1k in a split second. The last thing I expected to dig (out of my dad's basement) was this and, although I don't remember doing it it is evident that I did exactly that. First SLQ I've ever found!! Brought it home and put it in hot water and just fanned all the dirt off with a q-tip. Made sure not even the stick of the q-tip touched it. Took the photo and saw the amazing details....and the swipe. Anyways, like I said, we only have one local coin dealer and he was not very helpful. First of all he looks at it through his loop, opens his book and first thing out of his mouth was "well, it's just a common date..." He also told me that you just have to go online and submit it. So I just bought a holder for it and left. Thanks for re-affirming my thoughts on sending it in. Don't know that I'm going to sell it (of course my wife says different) but I would like to send it to NGC just out of curiosity. I just don't want to buy a membership to something just to send one coin in and I don't see anyone local. If I do decide to sell it. Will it make a big difference if I sell it raw vs graded? That's always a possibility too.
Yes, that was the whole point of my post. When Extremely Fine is THREE to FOUR TIMES Very Fine, and you have a skeptical buyer, that's the time to have a top TPG backing you up. Very few coins show this kind of multiple in the "guessable" grades.
It should grade around XF-40-45 Details . Still it's a nice looking coin even with the hairlines . I think you could get about 70% of what you could have gotten . IMHO
Check out this link for NGC 1927-S SLQ. Not really a common date, one of the lowest mintages. My last submission to NGC via economy tier took 45 days to get back, but it's average cost per coin was $19.05 (fees, Ins. & postage). I submitted 20 coins at one time. >>> http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/CoinDetail.aspx?CoinID=15764
I think you'll get a little higher grade out of that coin . . . AU Details in my opinion . . . VERY nice find. It would be nice to know how you made out.
Thanks all. This is the kind of educated information I look for. Very much appreciated. I never really noticed the different rates that coins can jump in value until I went back and looked at it again. This one does go up ridiculously exponentially as the grade goes up compared to other coins I have that I've been looking up. One way or another I'm going to send it in.
Big jump from xf to au and people trust the top 2 tpgs in my opinion it's an xf 45 details I send coins to pcgs with frequency as I buy quite a bit of raw coins out of estates if you can't find anyone
My grade? You were the one that was spot-on with it. With my limited knowledge and some research I did think you were right. And, of course, I was sure hoping you were right.
Well, if you're ever of a mind to sell it, I'd be a most accommodating consignor. Thanks for the great story . . . it's so unusual for anyone to find a true rarity these days. - Mike
