As some of you know I like "sleeper" coins. So what do you all think of the 1927-D Standing Liberty Quarter? A highly popular series and this one has less than one million minted. Only ones with lower mintages are the 1916 and 1927-S. Now I know that the pre-1925 design was notorious for the date wearing off. Still, third lowest mintage and VERY little respect. Case in point here. Today my boss bought a decent set of quarters. Barbers, Standing Liberties and Washingtons. He knows I like the 27S SLQ. Offered it to me for $30. A G4 coin that I feel was cleaned. Turned it down as I have about 25 already and stopped buying them in the $10-12 range. So I inquired about the 27-D. I have but a few of those. The price was right so I bought it. Here's the coin in question. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0018-1.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0019-4.jpg Nothing fantastic but the date is full, the mintmark is strong and it looks original. Comsidering melt is at about $3 I happily dropped $5 for it. I figure this may be my next "sleeper". If I can nail these as they come in I will. I have at least 25 27-S now and would gladly sell them at $20-25 each in order to trade up to a higher end (XF or better) coin. Would probably have to throw in some cash as well but it would be worth it as I have $250 tops into my G-VG coins. Does the same possiblility work with the 27D? Don't really thinks so looking at the numbers but if one plays ones cards right there is the potential to gain some nice examples down the road by buying cheap now. Thoughts? clembo
Can't beat it for the price , who knows where the price on these are gonna go , look what they're paying for 09-S ,14-D pennies , & the way they're getting melted , who knows , good find . rzage
I think they're under rated. But, that whole series is hard to figure out for me. Why are SLQ's with more than 10 times the mintage totals, and there are a few, selling for more than twice the price as the 27 D in comperable grades? Guy~
I, too, have given up on figuring out prices for the coins in that set. If you look at the price guides, it doesn't look like an expensive set (except for the usual couple...), but try finding them sitting around for decent prices. While I don't get out much, I'm also not sure how popular they are. I see a LOT of the 25 -30 P's, but the rest of them aren't jumping up and down and waving their arms at me. I will say that its my favorite coin design. Mega cool as far as I'm concerned.
clembo I agree, I have been looking for the 27 S & 27 D's for years. Good catch, and I agree with the upgrade.
Coleguy and Pocket Change, You'll notice that the coins with the higher values are all pre 1925. In 1925 the date was recessed because the earlier dates wore out so fast. Like buffalo nickels another beautiful but horribly designed coin IMHO. I recently posted a 1923 for grading opinions. Many said F12 which it has the detail for. As for the date the 3 is partially visible and that's basically it. When we buy junk silver I constantly see SLQs with no dates. A lot of these have fine or so detail and even strong mintmarks but no trace of a date. Really makes me wonder what the date was. Bqcoins says keep hoarding the 27-S. I won't argue with that. When I see those at the right price I jump on them. Don't see the right price nearly as often as I used to. The 27-D, however, still surfaces cheap. Working at a shop helps of course hence my $5 purchase. I was surprised that he gave it to me so far below bid though. It is an odd series and tough to figure out but if you can get the "better" dates cheap I suggest jumping on them. clembo
