Who said post mint mutilation? That is a one of a kind... this cent has been double-struck, misaligned and looks like a small rotation error. These guys are saying what in the heck is that,.....I'm saying send it to have it attributed immediately. I have never seen anything like this.

It's not a genuine double strike... Looks like post mint damage. If the coin was double struck how do you explain the reverse being gone?? Let alone the coin being oval... Both are indicators of something post mint.

Lorenzian, we need a few pics of the reverse. I suspect typical wear for a wheat. So far, I see no reverse missing....just wear.

I think this one is a LEGITIMATE ERROR but very very OLD OLD UGLY ONE.....

Well... the coin has a full rim... This indicates that it was struck normally. The fact that it is oval indicates that pressure was applied outside of the collar unevenly... After the strike. The fact that the reverse is gone shows that it was smashed against something flat... Not a die.

Show me another double struck coin that exhibits this oval shape and a nearly blank reverse... You won't find one.

I am not saying the coin is a genuine double-struck error. But one explanation for the "reverse being gone" is the coin was struck and did not leave the coining chamber. A new planchet was placed in the collar and this previously-struck coin was situated on top of the planchet (slightly offset). When the dies came together the planchet below this coin acted like a die and flattened the raised features on the reverse of the coin. With two coins (rather, a coin and a planchet) in the coining chamber I would expect a much stronger strike for the second obverse strike (and a corresponding strong strike on the reverse of the bottom planchet (along with a nice brockage on the obverse)).

I am not saying that is what happened. (I don't think it is a genuine error myself but I could be wrong.)

The reverse elements that are there appear to be incuse... It's a creative vice job.

Doesn't look right to me. The shape, missing reverse, mushy details seems fishy...

Dutchmen, it looks like the coin was struck in collar on the obverse....?????? I am lost. This is truly one of a kind. I'm no-one the Dutchmen has to have the final say. As moderator, tell this guy what he needs to do with this coin.

    Simple - something called "pressure"
