That should be MS-65 Sold for $106,375 ??!!?? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1118&Lot_No=189&type=&ic= What the heck am I missing here?
My understanding is the 1926-S is among the worst struck of all the Lincolns. They are very hard to find nice examples of, so when they do show up they are worth a lot.
WOW! that is a nice coin. It is MS 65, not 63. and that's why. This is the highest grade 26S Lincoln. and IMO, it is deserving of a 66. These are EXTREMELY hard to find with any red at all. and one in this condition, full red will bring a nice premium for sure.
Your are implying that it was a different coin. It is actually the same coin sold a second time. Just to prove the point, it is the only PCGS 1926-S graded 65 RED. BTW, my avatar is that coin the last time it sold.
Maybe I should have said it sold for ONLY $106,000? Condition sure does make a difference. There are two MS-xx 1926-S cents on ebay right now. Not mega thousands but still red and lower MS.
FWIW, it rather surprised me that it went that cheap. His 1914-S 66 RED went for $83,000+ and there are 3 of them.
Especially a pop top semi-key, eh? Although I did hear quite a bit of scuttle on another board that the coins were not properly sold, to say the least. Had they been consigned to FUN that they would have done better..etc... auction wasn't open to live bidders, not at a major show, etc. Yeah, but I don't think that a coin like this is not going to bring the money because of that.
