1924-D Lincoln Penny (Rotated Die)

I purchased a 1924-D Lincoln Penny on ebay in 2006 that had a 90 degree rotated die. I couldn't find anything on this unusual error on the internet and couldn't understand why anyone would create an error coin for a relatively low value item like this one. I bought the coin for about $20 because it was a little cheaper than other 1924-D Lincoln Pennies on ebay and thought it kind of neat. The coin has a lot of wear but not a G-4 probably a VG-8. If it was a counterfeit, I would have expected better quality. Has anyone heard of a reverse die (90 degree) counterfeit of a 1924-D Lincoln?

don't expect high quality counterfeits, be prepared. But we definitely need a photo. Thanks

I have not heard of one, but would make the assumption (pardon the expression) that there would be little or no added value.

What would make you think that it is a fake?

I really don't think that it is a fake. I'm not a grader but I've been collecting coins my entire life. My first love was collecting pennies. I have other 1924-D pennies and it looks pretty much identical to them other than the 90 degree die error. I've also looked on the net and in my coin books and haven't noticed any mention of die errors on the Lincoln 24-D. They do mention that die errors occur sometimes and sometimes don't add value to the coins. I've also been on ebay for quite some time. Valuable coins don't tend to go cheap on there. Thus, I thought I bought a fake since I didn't get any real challenges on this purchase. I'm very skeptical of too good a deal. On the other hadn, I figured that it was only $20.

I wouldn't worry too much about a counterfeit, but a photo would help. If the mintmark looks good, it probably is.

I don't think a rotated die is any reason to suspect it's a fake. Rotated dies are known to happen and are interesting. I don't know how much of a premium it would add to this coin, but I think it would be a neat piece in any collection. I'll bet it would add a little premium though to the right collector. I would actually prefer it on a 1924-D as opposed to most others because that is a more desirable date in the series.

I would love to see pics.

It is my first time with the pics and I apologize for the quality. As I mentioned earlier, it isn't a great quality coin (G-4 to VG-8). I hope this works.

rotated dies are collectable, condition not great but a unusual coin none the less

I think the detail level of your pics is good enough. I would try photographing them again with a stronger light source.

Very interesting coin though! I'd say its worth at least some kind of premium over the run of the mill 24-d g/vg. just imo

24-D rotated reverses up to about 45 degrees are quite common. I have never had one past 90 like your pic. Premium, not really, it's already a pricy date and some might be put off by it.

    1924 D rotated die

I also have a 1924 D rotated die but is only about 20 degrees rotated.

The picture I took shows it upright but it is rotated counter clock wise, much like one of the 1922 weak D die #3's I have.

The funny thing about the picture is the scratch looks much worse than it actually is.

You may also notice what looks like doubling on the nose.
