This coin has a circular obverse die break from 3 O'Clock, anti-clockwise through the Y, under the LIBERT, through the G on GOD and into the neck. What grade do you make it? Bruce
I forgot to mention that they tried to repair the die by filing it under the TY in LIBERTY and under the IN GOD WE TRUST. That may account for some scratch type marks there. And Ben, Yeah the reverse would help. Bruce
Bruce, Are you saying that the Mint Employees tried to repair the Die by filing it? Or was the coin filed in those areas in an attempt to remove the raised Die Crack? The reason I ask, is that I do not know how that filing the Die would remove the Die Crack unless it is a very shallow crack! Once a Die Crack opens enough to leave evidence of it on a coin, then the Crack has extended well below the surface of the Die. Also, even if they did file the Die, it would probably be a temporary, short-lived fix. Frank
I got the information from this source: http://www.vamworld.com/1923-S+VAM-1B The mint employees, in those days, I guess. tried to extend the life of the die. For what reasons, I don't know. I can only speculate that they wanted to keep production going and maybe there wasn't another die pair ready to go??? I think that my coin was earlier in the cracking stage than some photos I've seen in the VAMWORLD website. Maybe not. Bruce
"Boldest Die Break of any Wisconsin token" The auction listings, in catalog and on the internet, stated, "U/U, and the Boldest Die Break of any Wisconsin token." It is also clear that the 'U' in Huntley has been recut, and is considered to be a 'die sinker's error.' This Civil War Store Card is identified as WI 410E-1a (R2). It grades AU-53. It came from the recent auction of the Civil War Token collection of Chester L. Krause, author of World Coin Catalogs.
Are you sure that's a die break near the Y is the line raised, because your coin has alot of scratches on the surface? I see the die scratch to God to the neck.I would say the coin is a XF 40. JC
