Hello again, since I still have the borrowed macro lens, I thought I would take advantage of it and get you to pick this one a part. Thanks in advance.

I found this one in one of those 5k sacks of wheaties a few years ago.

At the time, the one in my set was a G or a VG, worn but filling the hole type of coin. I put this one in thinking it could fill the hole for a while.

btw, the color of these photo's are all screwed up. Way too washed out, even with indirect light. I would describe the coin as RB at best. In hand it is an interesting coin because if you lay it down it looks brown but as you pick it up it turns a deep red/brown.

    So keeper or clunker?

    Thanks in advance

That is a nice strike for a 23-S. They are the rarest Lincoln with any red so good luck finding one.

I say that because the one you pictured looks like it has been cleaned. I say that because of the spots (common to cleaned coins, but not limited to them), the uniformity of the color across the nicks and the date/lettering has the dirt surrounding each. However, bear in mind that I am saying that based on an admittedly poor picture.

That is what makes me hesitate. If it is original luster it is a keeper, if it is not, back to the bags or a kids set.

Under the loupe, not scratched other than the obvious nicks.

The spots are there, but wouldn't that be expected in one of those big sacks of wheaties? I did not do anything to it that I can remember, might of wiped it but I doubt it. I put it aside till I fininished that bag and then considering the condition of the old one I decided to swap em.

My dilemma is assuming all bags are presearched, that coin was in there either because someone overlooked it as a RB 50's or threw it in there because it was cleaned. It came out of a really good bag too, one that yielded a large amount of pre-34's.

I honestly don't know and I don't consider myself a "lucky" bag searcher.

    Thanks

It's been cleaned - there is no luster at all, looks washed out.

It has a serious Tarn-Xed look to it, but we're not seeing it in hand. The die crack at the lower right wheat ear is interesting though.
