Hello all my expert friends! I just got this in the mail yesterday and spent a hour or so trying to research the Designer and get a little history on this plate. I'm a Peace and Morgan $ nut and bought this cause it's just plain cool. The seller describes it as a "Graphic Artists 1923 Dollar Coin Image For Catalog Engraving Dated 1962" and " From promoters estate - Vince Giorgi Early to Mid 1960s" Would love to here your thoughts and any additional info on the history of this plate. I believe this to be a foil plate used for printing. ENJOY!
Really interesting item. I hope someone out there actually knows what it is, because all I can do is make an educated guess. First, I don't see how it can be a printing plate - the image would have had to be reversed for that. I don't have one these catalogs in front of me right now, but I am sure I have seen action catalogs with faux foil coins on the cover. My guess: it's an artists proof of a foil coin image for an auction catalog.
Harry, thanks for the response. In offset printing the plate would be a positive image created from a negitive, the plate gets ink'd up and transfers the image to another cylinder on the press with a soft blanket around the cylinder, this impression is a negative and transfer the ink to the paper which becomes positive. I use to own a printing business with a friend in the 90's and we use to use a cheap foil type plate for short runs, that's what leads me to believe it's plate used for offset printing, of course I could be totally wrong....and I could have my printing facts wrong as well, it's been a while and I wasn't the brains behind the process.
JAY-AR: I suspect you are more likely to be right than me. Still hoping there is someone out there who knows exactly what it is. Either way, printing plate or proof, it is a really interesting item.
