Well, more info, or pictures would be helpful. From the description you've given, I can safely say that coin is worth somewhere between 8 dollars and 6000 dollars. By the way, welcome to the forum.
Howdy prags - Welcome to the Forum !! The reason Adam says that is because a coin's value is largely dependant upon it's condition. A worn or beat up dollar coin of that year could be worth it's silver content, or about $8 or $9 dollars. A pristine example in very high grade could be worth thousands. On average, $12 is pretty much it.
