Hello all! I was examining a 1922-S Peace Dollar that I purchased about two months ago. I am pretty certain that the Olive Branch is detached from the eagle's talon, however I noticed and perhaps imagined a few other things about this coin and wanted to ask if anyone has heard of such an animal. 1. I have a fine die crack that runs along the circumference of the coin, starting underneath and from the R in Liberty to the just above the final T in Trust. 2. Their is doubling of the R, T, & Y in Liberty 3. It appears that their is some doubling (maybe tripling) in the larger rays of the Tiara between the B and E of Liberty 4. A small die crack on the lowermost group of three olive leaves on the reverse I am pretty sure that this is an early die state used for trial runs given the detached Olive branch and with Morgan's tinkering with the Francesci's design to make the coin possible who knows what happened at the mint. I could not find anything in my copy of the Cherry Pickers Guide of the Whitman Guide to Peace Dollars. If anyone who has a more extensive library could help me out, it would be appreciated. Sorry, I am unable to post any photos at this time. Thanks!
Without a photo, impossible to attribute by description. Check this page. The B-1 reverse is detached olive branch. http://www.vamworld.com/1922-S+VAMs welcome to the forum ! Jim
I think that it may be the VAM 1G Die File Lines which is apparent on my coin. You can also see the start of the Die Crack starting right off of the R and running across the the top of the Bun. Thanks Jim!
Interesting. I haven't seen that VAM in person before. Easy one to pick up with the lines. R-5 also. Since it isn't in the top 50, PCGS nor NGC will attribute it, so it can be a find in a regular 1922-S slab. Jim
That is an interesting coin. It has features tht are not well documented and may be actually at odds with the official dogma of the time. Take the missing mountain or foothill. It is there but the center has been cut away by one of the incuse lines outling the rays. Incuse touchup like that shouldn't be there (unless it was in the original model). You will also note the tail of R in DOLLAR does not extend beyond the ray for the same reason.
