:D All seriousness aside, the hole is obviously post-mint and I think the ONE (if that's what it is) is a completely unrelated thing.

Then again, one possible explanation is a second, very off-center and rotated strike, with some foreign object having gotten into the works, causing the coin to stay partially in place for the second strike. That foreign object could then have been the cause of the hole, so the raised features and the hole would have been simultaneous. It's a heck of an interesting coin, and I'd like to hear more opinions.

Looks like someone used pliers or vice-grips to hold onto the coin as it was drilled. Perhaps they tried different clamping methods and imparted some kind of design on it in the process. Hard to say from the photo.

Can you post a picture of the entire obverse and one of the entire reverse? If it is a double struck coin the reverse should have had some of the design imparted on it as well.

    Curious coin ;)

That really looks ike a severely clashed die, with the perfect "o" in it. Let the experts examine it closer.

OK...the reverse image helped. Look at the details underneath the eagles tail and compair it to the 1921 shown at http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dollars/peace_dollars/peace_dollars.html Definitely more there than should be. I'd agree that the added details (O and under tail) were caused by a rotated dieclash. Neat find....too bad the coin was encased at some point in time....i.e was used for jewelry, then pried loose (added damage to forhead and in the field just infront of liberty's eyes). Could be wrong, but it probably brings the coins value down to melt.

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/4280/dieclash0012vb.jpg I guess the thing that bothers me the most about the "damaged area" on the head is all the extra dodads running in different direction? I want to wrap this up but would like to add another photo and just get a few more comments. Thanks for taking the time to look.
