According to this vamworld site, it looks like there are well over 100 die varieties for the 1922-P Peace Dollar, and that number may be incomplete given some recent finds, including at least one this year. Anyway, I tried to match up the one I have and they don't seem to match up with any of the ones listed. The closest one I believe is the "extra hair" VAM-2C variety, but mine doesn't have the extra hair. It resembles VAM-2C's doubled date (mine looks to have all digits doubled) and doubled face (entire left side of bust). Would this be the same die as VAM-2C before the damage to the die that caused the "extra hair" relief to appear? Thanks in advance!
Initially, I thought yes. The more I stare at it, the more I think Machine Doubling (the 1 in 1922, specifically).
Maybe VAM-2C has MD in the date and face, too, because it doesn't mention those devices to be doubled despite being vividly evident. The doubling on mine seems to match the doubling on the VAM-2C examples, as either strong MD or DDO. And, if it is from the same die, I wonder if it'd be called VAM-2C (either VAM-2C1 or VAM-2C2) despite the lack of the "extra hair", or maybe it would be called something like VAM-2C3 as a new variety (?).
Looks like a DDO to me. It does appear similar to the VAM you mentioned as well. Minus the extra hair of course. I'm interested to see what the more knowledgeable folks have to say.
That's machine doubling. Quite common for 1922. Typically shows up on the nose, neck, and date. It doesn't figure into the attribution.
If anyone has the answer, it's @messydesk I'm sorry we didn't get you the answer you wanted, but I'm now certain it is MD, though at least a cool amount of it.
