1922-D Peace Dollar - blackened & off to the fiery furnace?...

    Hi,
Here is my 1922-D Peace dollar which has seen better days. My Coin Snap app says it's VF - nope, don't think so!

I know it's worn, scratched, and the rim is damaged, but the surface looks like someone held it over a sooty candle; it's really blackened.

What causes this type of discoloration? And, because of the discoloration (and wear and tear), does it go off to the furnace?

    Many thanks!

A VF Peace Dollar has the hair over the eye as being well worn. It may only have a few strands over, around or by the ear. Some feathers on the eagle are visible. Your coin displays all of these characteristics so I would say it’s Fine to VF. As for the black, a number of things could have caused that, a fire is one. Given the date and mint mark it’s very common and despite being in the Fine range it’s only worth melting value.

Looks like it was in a campfire. Found a few in my past detecting days. Mostly Large cents. I like mine Medium rare please. Not blackened , that's fish. Right?

Altered corroded surfaces. As long as it weighs, it is still a cull. $25

Certainly has been exposed to an open flame. Campfire? In a home that burned down? If only our coins could talk.... But it will always hold the silver value.
