I have an opportunity to purchase this coin for around $150. It seems a steal for this date/grade except for the rather large rim ding. So, is it worth it? Thanks for any responses I may get.
2011 Redbook prices that coin in Good at $180, VG is priced at $225. According to that it sounds like a good deal.
I would grade it at best in a VG-10 probably closer to a VG-8, but it will be very hard to sell with that rim ding later on down the road. Even though it's a key date, in VG with the rim ding i would say value is right around $120. You have to remember you or your family members will eventually have to try to sell it for profit... I would try to talk them down to $110 max. i'd pay is $125. Good luck and keep us posted!
Red book is good for about 90% of the price listed, but is a good reference! One thing you have to remember is that red book is printed to my knowledge once a year. And Grey sheet is under priced in my opinion, so if you want a fair value on neumastatic coins you find a price range between greysheet and red book. One thing i try to do is buy at or below greysheet and try to sell at red book, but in the back of my mind i know im probably going to get haggled down a bit...
