Merged the two threads into this one. desertgem Hi. I posted this earlier but I am new to the community so not sure if it was approved or it went through. Sorry if this is a dupe (the original post was 8 hours earlier). Anyway, long story short...this Walking Liberty 1921-D, otherwise in F+ condition (nice skirt lines and details) has been scratched ... many years ago. The clean appears to never have been cleaned or doctored in any other way It appears some clown who didn't know it at the time etched his initials and the date . The etching is located around 2:00 on the obverse. Look closely, between the R and T in Liberty is what appears to be JT followed by 4/21/41? (a date). The date scratch is scrawled between the T and Y in Liberty. Although the scratches are barely visible to the naked eye - and much more so under magnification - they are there. They do not distract your eye (eye appeal) as badly as say a major obverse scratch would right in the center of a coin...but the scratches are there. My question is, how much would you estimate this detracts from the value of this key coin? 10%, 20%, 50%? Below is the best picture I can muster...Any opinions are welcomed. Best picture I can upload is below:
21-D Walking Liberty / Noticed no picture attached The newbie failed to attach the picture (not sure if I am attaching this correctly but I wil ltry again). Anyway: Hi. This would only download the photo on your computer, notice the "file://C:........etc." This indicates a file on your computer, and if we could access your computer that easily, we could see your tax record, etc.... Which we can't. If you need help, let us know, or you can use the search button above. Welcome! Jim
He was able to upload the photo on one of his other threads but the photo is too small to see much detail. In general graffiti is considered damage and will reduce the value of the coin. The major grading services usually will not grade a coin with graffiti unless it is a great rarity.
Hi!, I think I just ran into the previous posting, and commented about the posting of photo. It appears you corrected that problem But, either a closer photo of the area is needed or a larger overall image. If you have a magnifier, try taking the photo through it of the area you are discussing. Also for a grade, photo of both sides would be needed. Generally, even for minor scratches, a grade lower on the pricing should be expected. Since many would like to get their key date certified, and if the scratches or graffiti makes it ungradable, it might suffer more.
