I got a 1921 Peace dollar the other day...yes I know I shouldn't have...its cleaned BUt I see what may be a VAM...and if not I'll just trade this for a nicer one The photos show where you can see the most...but also the: Date IN GOD TRUST The designers littel logo below the neck also look doubled. I tried to get better photos of the letters and date but I just can't do it. So is this a VAM? or what? Thanks Speedy
Yes. VAMs just identify the die pair used. All Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. With that said, I have no idea what it is!!! Is it doubled on the entire coin, like machine doubling? I think there were only two die pairs used 1921. With the two pairs and different die states, there are seven known VAMs. You can check other parts of your coin against the some photos of the 7 VAMs. The VAM 1A has a break over the LA in DOLLAR. VAM 1B has a die gouge dot over N in ONE. VAM 1C has polising lines on both sides and pitting on reverse. The VAM 1D has a die flake in front of Liberty's temple. VAM 1E has three die gouges near the eagle's left wing. Don't have a picture of a VAM 3. The rays behind the first L in DOLLAR was engraved deeper on the die. The ray appears on top of the letter instead of behind it.
Nope....the back in great...the rest of the obv is alright too...it does look like some Machine DD in one way...the Doubled parts are flat...not rounded. I guess this will go in for a trade sometime! I have my eye on another one...now if I can just get the loan from Pop's! ;--) Speedy
