My friends father gave him the coin when his daughter was born. he wants to know what its worth. I 'll get him to take a picture of it, what should he look for.
Just try to get a nice clear picture of both the obverse (front) and reverse (back) and make sure its pretty big if your going to post it. Typically, the 1921 is a very common dollar. The vast majority are "Morgan Dollars" and are only worth melt value unless in high grade. However, a small number of "Peace" dollars were also minted in 1921 and those are valuable. The difference is obvious and in the design. if its a 1921 morgan, its worth somewhere around $16-$17, depending on condition. if its a 1921 peace, its worth somewhere around $110-$120, depending on condition. silver dollars melt for $10 each, if its in really bad shape.
I know it's only a coincidence but (Atocha jewelry) used to sell a lot of 1921 Silver Dollars on eBay, both Peace and Morgan... Pretty good stuff at times too http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&myWorld=true&userid=atochajewelry
