I picked this coin up for next to nothing...I didnt buy it because of its condition. I actually think its been cleaned. I got it because I noticed something a little different with the tail feathers on the reverse. Can someone help me figure out if this is a VAM? There are so many listed and I cant find a match.
And maybe its just a really common grease filled die error. Hope someone more experienced than me will help me out. VAM 1-E maybe? Its hard to tell from the pics on Vam world.
You can find tailfeather conditions all over the map with all Morgans, and 1921's are no exception. Indeed, the fact that this is such a weakly-detailed area is the likely cause of all the "Scribbles" 1921's. If you look at fifty of them, from any of the three mints, I'd be surprised if you find those left side feathers more or less completely missing on fewer than half.
In other words, the left side feathers would be missing...or porrly defined on at least half of the 50?
Yes. I tend to be obscure when I'm typing quickly. A random sampling of some of my images of 1921's - I have about 200 different coins in my local archive - tended to bear that out.
Thanks guys. After taking a closer look at my other Morgans, I see what you're talking about. I thought I had really scored something neat for the $18 purchase price. Lol. At the very least, I guess its still an $18 Morgan.
Haha. Ill probably tuck it away with the other ones and in 50 years when i die, my kids will find my stash and have to figure it out.
Heck, for $18 you would have a perfectly good excuse for a bragging thread just based on the price. This is an ideal candidate for a pocket piece. Carrying one in your pocket (I do) changes your attitude about pocket change entirely, and offers occasional opportunity to spread the gospel of collecting. A few years down the line, the polishing will be worn away, as well.
I like that idea. Im an electrician and Im snowed under with work and had to hire another guy. I make him stick with me until I can trust him enough to tackle jobs on his own. But Im constantly talking about coins and stopping at coin shops. I've got him checking his pocket change now. Lol. Hes not seeking out coins, but I've got him interested.
You can follow in TradeDollarNut's footsteps. He's an electrician, too, who ended up building the finest-ever (finest possible, he had all of the Top Pops) set of Trade Dollars and the only set of Seated Dollars ever completed in Mint State.
