Hello, I am new to this group. There is a lot of good information on this site, and I am glad to be a member. I am looking for opinions on grade for a 1921 P Morgan that I have. My pics are at : http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q157/bostonhodgkins/? I took a bunch ( too many perhaps-haha) of pics, in varying angles and lighting. The rim is slighty damaged, and the breast appears to be weakly struckly and/or worn. However, to my eyes, it has good reflective qualities. Taking pics that show an accurate representation of a coin is quite hard, for me at least. On a flat surface the coin reflects my finger to about 12-14 inches, on both sides. On a flat surface, holding a buisness card overhead, it reflects the text from about 4-5 inches from both sides. All of the pics are unaltered. This coin stumps me. I would appreciate any and all opinions. Thanks!
thanks for the welcome, I was just updating the pics in my link, so that may be the reason. Sorry 'bout that Thanks
The chest on the eagle looks suspicious, like someone try polishing it with a tool or something... -Rob
I agree with Rob, And actually will go further and say that the whole coin looks polished to me, particularly the reverse. Bostonhodgkins, what baffles you about the coin?, just the extreme shininess??
At first glance, the coin looks beautiful, clean and problem free but if you compare it with one that really is (mine...hehe),you'll see that it is actually quite worn. There is almost no trace of the breast feathers on the eagle and this is certainly not due to a weak strike. It has been polished or circulated, probably both. The good news is,this is a pretty inexpensive coin to get in AU/BU condition if you want to upgrade.
why I am baffled Yes, I was baffled by the amount of shine and the weak breast, although does that have to do with 21's being flat breasted as opposed to being round breasted? Also, the faint (to my eye) scratches on the reverse made me think it may be possible that it was machine polished, but after another examination I don't think it is the case, the scratches were not in circular pattern. Also, under a cheap loupe, its reflective qualites appear pervasive, not just on the surface. I am baffled because, in limited experience, I have not seen a 1921 like this. Appreciate your time and opinions
What should I pay to get a morgan that nice? Thanks. I would like to get a collection going of morgans and even the peace dollars.
On eBay you'll be able to sell that one for about $15 with those pictures and buy a much nicer one less than 25. Here's one now: http://cgi.ebay.com/1921-P-MORGAN-MS64-65-BLAST-WHITE-NICE-OLD-COIN-18_W0QQitemZ290045077082QQihZ019QQcategoryZ39465QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290045077082:bow:
