Can someone please take a look at this auction and voice their opinion. Does this coin look like it has been cleaned? http://cgi.ebay.com/1921-S-MORGAN-S...384743436QQcategoryZ39466QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Also, certain websites list the value of an uncirculated 1921 Morgan from $20 and up, depending on the mint, and of course the condition. www.mintproducts.com sells a supposed MS-60 to MS-63 1921 Morgan for $16.95. I know value is relative, but if the going rate is at least $20, why would they sell for $16.95? Has anyone purchased a coin like this from mintproducts.com? If so, what was your experience?
Yes, I think the coin has been harshly cleaned. I also think it has been polished afterwards. As for value, the '21 Morgan is one of the most common dates and to say it is worth $20 in low MS grades may be a bit much. The ad from Mint Products reinforces this as you noted. While I have never bought coins like this from Mint Products, I have purchased from them before and always been happy with my purchase.
What makes you say that? Are the small scratches on liberty's face an indication? I am beginning to think that about 90% of the coins on eBay have been cleaned, polished, or both. My question is do the sellers have any idea?
Less than 4 hours to go and still below bullion, even with shipping included. Does that answer the question of whether cleaning affects value Take "on eBay" out of that sentence, and it's still true. Sometimes they do, but many times they are just as much in the dark as some of the bidders.
Yes it is. But there are also small hairline scratches over the entire surface of the coin. With experience you can learn to see this at a glance. And about 99.9% of the time when you see a coin that looks that way in a pic ( in this case the reverse in particular ) it has been polished. Roy's comment is quite correct - it really doesn't have anything to do with ebay. It's just the way it is.
21 Morgan I too would say that this coin has seen some major cleaning. Notice around the stars, it looks pretty obvious to me. I would value this coin based on whatever spot silver is at that day. JMO
You can get a UNC 1921 Morgan around here pretty cheap...like $10-$15.....I still can also pick up some junk silver dollars for about $7-$8 each but I never do....don't collect Morgans or Peace dollars. Speedy
How can you see hairline scratches from these pics? Did you download them and zoom in, or is your eye just that trained to see those? Aside from the ones on her face, I don't think I see many others. But I did notice around and behind the majority of the letters (particularly the word UNUM) there seems to be an unnatural brightness. I noticed the same thing around the stars which I assume is what JIM was referring to.
Hi, That coin is a harshly cleaned clunker and is barely VF in condition. It is a bullion coin in my opinion. Not worth more than about $8.00 or so. Have Fun, Bill
No I didn't zoom in on anything - no need to. It's more a matter of experience. Coins that have been harshly cleaned have a certain look about them, once you get used to seeing it it's kind of hard to miss.
1921 S Morgan rare? http://www.collectsource.net/Photos10/10_21s9.jpg I looked at the above coin and to the untrained eye it almost looks close to the PCGS example they use to describe a coin of the same year: http://caimages.collectors.com/coinfacts/large/07163273.jpg Still trying to figure out how to figure out if a coin has 16 or 17 berries. Would you say the first coin link is a nice coin? I think it looks like the PCGS Zerbe coin...? I would like to hit the buy it now button. :secret: PCGS says their image is a Zerbe coin: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/CoinDetail.aspx?s=7348&redir=t
Uhh, please start buying those dollar coins for 7-8 bucks each... assuming they're junk Peace dollars or Morgans, they're worth $13 and change melt value. I'll buy them off you in bulk for spot plus a little bit for shipping.
